Landscape Print – Left Past The Silver

There's nothing quite like the atmosphere of wandering through woodland when the mist descends. Aside from the enchantment that seems to lie across the land, the added mist has the strange effect of being able to saturate colours whilst eliminating harsh light. The nature of mist also means that, depending on its thickness, visibility is reduced so visual clutter is eliminated making it easier for the photographer to compose an image. Noise is somewhat deadened in the heavy air so there are no distractions and the overall stillness means you don't have to compensate for movement within the scene. Its basically an environment of lush atmosphere with the bonus of added practicality. No wonder us photographers love it so much.
I, of course, love to wander through woods even without the camera but my senses and appreciation seem that bit more attuned with it as I wander and take in the shape and form of things as they are brought into relief against the muted background.
In December of 2021, a bank of fog blanketed almost the entire country so I headed to the nearest affected woodland of Garbutt Nature Reserve for a reccy. Sadly I didn't have time to fully explore the deeper, more ancient woodland but I was struck by this shot of 3 silver birch trunks stood amidst the conifers as a gravel path wound its way past through the woods. Sometimes photography can simply be sharing the beauty of a scene, other times its about telling a story and I feel this is one of the rare times I may have achieved the latter.
