It Never Ends

a timeless sentinel in the snow

history and resilience

Hadrian's Wall is such a symbol of history and resilience that I can think of no better way to exemplify that fact than the stark and rugged landscape over which it runs. The ancient stones stand silent against the elements and I often wonder what it must have been like for those stationed along it its length all those centuries ago.

a moment in time

As well as the historic connotations of this image, I chose this photo for its minimalism. Let's face it, this could be a photo of any drystone wall such are the nondescript stretches of it, but I find this scene transports me to a world of whispers and seclusion. The rugged texture of the wall and of the landscape itself is softened by the snow's embrace evoking a sense of solitude and mystery.

Photographing this image was a fun experience as I love to play in the snow. This area between Cawfield and Steel Rigg sits at a deceptively high elevation so I was actually stood above the cloud base at this time being peppered with driving pellets of snow. It was pretty much a blizzard. Seeing the wall undulate before me and disappearing into the cloud, I knew I had to be as resilient as the wall itself and just grab the shot. There is a harshness to the scene, but also a sense of purity, and scenes such as this have always appealed to me.
