Garlic Meadow

a serene forest floor of flowering garlic

woodland ramson carpet

Every Spring, there are fewer things more calming and peaceful than to wander through a woodland carpeted with flowering garlic. In the right conditions such as this scene of soft, hazy sunlight dappling the forest floor, the feeling can be heightened by the evocative rustic scent that emanates from the sometimes endless carpet of ramson.

waiting for the light

Morpeth's Bluebell Wood ironically plays host to a carpet of flowering wild garlic every Spring which blankets the forest floor in this enchanting Spring scene. Despite its moniker, this area of woodland contains an excellent example of blossoming garlic where some amazing stretches await the patient photographer looking to grab the most evocative shot.

Every year I head here and though the areas worth photographing are certainly finite, it becomes increasingly about waiting for the perfect light which occurred (after much waiting around) whilst I was setting up this shot. With a hazy sky and blanket of cloud overhead, the sun's appearance was a rare one though the diffuse light was still sufficient. Just as the sun was about to disappear for the day though - and consequently for the rest of Spring - it broke through the canopy and fell in patches throughout the wood, creating a perfect image for bringing a touch of woodland magic to your space.
