beauty and grandeur
Immediately identifiable, Hareshaw Linn is arguably the most famous waterfall in Northumberland and attracts many visitors all year round. The hike to the falls, which in itself features several smaller waterfalls, is a little over a mile and meanders back and forth across the Hareshaw Burn through a lush and unique woodland gorge.
The shear scale of the falls never fails to impress me and it always seems to sit smaller in my mind. As you hike up the small rise to the head of the gorge, the burn flows in rivulets of feathery silver through a pinch point in the rock walls before meandering south to empty into the River North Tyne.
I've never seen Hareshaw Linn in full spate and on this visit toward the end of summer it was probably at its lowest flow rate. This allowed not only for me to photograph a more gentle side to its character but also exposed the different tiers and striations in the rock face it slips over.
There are a ton of different angles and viewpoints from which to photograph the falls, especially for the more adventurous down in the burn, but a recess in the rock wall allowed me to grab this shot and be able to fill the frame (almost) unobstructed with its grandeur.
