The Way in Winter
the north pennine way in freezing fog
freezing fog shrouds the north pennine way
One afternoon in early December of 2022 saw the most incredible cloud inversion blanket the western arm of Hadrian's Wall and the North Pennine Way. Flowing over the landscape like a river of ghosts, it at times enchanted and at others enshrouded. This moment as it coursed over Steel Rigg was truly magical, daring to draw comparisons to certain enchanted lands dreamt up by C.S.Lewis.

river of ghosts
Throw in all the Game of Thrones comparisons you want here as Hadrian's Wall provided the setting for a stunning afternoon of winter photography. I originally came in search of snow and the hope of a good sunset but the conditions on this day were soon to be some of the best I've ever encountered.
Those of you who've been following me long enough will know I love a good inversion. Usually the domain of early morning shoots, this vast blanket of low lying fog rolled in during the early afternoon hours with the sun low in the sky. Flowing down from the north, it crashed like waves over the crags and riggs and undulated into the valleys at the head of the North Pennines. This photo captures one such moment where one filament rose up over the hill and shrouded everything in a blanket of hoar frost. All sound deadened and all movement stilled apart from this one frantic photographer scrambling into position. Such a beautiful, isolating moment.
This area near The Sill at Twice Brewed is a great place for landscape photography and contains so much visual interest. Hadrian's Wall itself forms the basis of many a leading line into a wild and rugged landscape. During the winter months, the sun sets to the left of the Wall as you run along it, casting dramatic shadows and hotspots of light across hill and dale.
This photo looks beautiful printed on Natural Soft Textured Bright White which renders it into an ethereal watercolour scene.
