misty autumn woodland waterfall

emerging from the mist

This view of High Force waterfall emerging from the mist, framed either side by vibrant autumn woodland, may be a common one for photographers, but its also one I myself have longed to take.

a natural masterpiece

High Force is one of the UK's largest and certainly most impressive waterfalls and the ability of mist to combine and soften that rugged landscape into something that is both still powerful yet ethereal is why I love to photograph in such conditions.

The nature of mist and fog also ensures that any woodland always appears more lush and vibrant, even more so during the autumn months when that foliage turns to fire. Combine these two aspects and you're left with an image that takes something delicate and emblazens it whilst softening something more powerful. A compelling juxtaposition to behold and a bizarre testimony to the unending variety of Nature.

High Force is definitely a waterfall that is best visited following prolonged periods of heavy rain where the single channel it usually falls down spills over to encompass the entire head of the gorge. However, even on less powerful days such as this, its still a striking force to behold whether softened by fog or not.
