The Heft and the Heave
crashing waves of storm babet at tynemouth pier
raw power
The resilience of man against the forces of nature perfectly sums up this image as the massive waves from Storm Babet crash over the lighthouse at the end of Tynemouth pier.

the power of the ocean
I can almost feel the full force of the ocean in this image as it batters the lighthouse, its crashing waves appearing to consume it. I could certainly feel the wind as I captured this image, struggling to stand upright as I cowered behind a small brick building down by the shore. This lighthouse proved to be more resilient than its smaller sister across the harbour, continuing to stand upright throughout and remain with its dome intact once the storm has passed.
The size of some of the waves breaking against the harbour arm were truly spectacular, sending spray over 100ft into the air. This is my favourite photo from the entire shoot where I just put the camera into high speed shooting mode and fired away at every opportunity. I must have taken thousands of shots overall but this one I love for its perspective and sense of scale; the pier acting almost like a battering ram against the oncoming forces of nature.
