Deathly Still

reflections of winter's chill

winter's frozen art

A prolonged period of sub zero temperatures and calm, windless weather brought a deathly stillness to Kielder Reservoir during the winter of 2025. On a whim, I headed out there and was fortunate enough to catch this wonderful row boat frozen in time and abandoned to winter's deathly grip...

a time for reflection

I have never seen Kielder Reservoir so flat and still as I did on this day with ice having formed and choking its many inlets. Again, this location is one of many I have stored in memory that I've oft spied from the road above as I've driven past, knowing that - given the right conditions - there's definitely a wonderful image is there for the taking.

This one of the abandoned rowing boat hugging the shore trapped in ice was another serendipitous catch that came about because I was wandering about the shoreline trying to photograph the other 2 boats in the scene. As I scrambled about trying to make the most of what little light there was left, I stumbled across the boat encased in ice and immediately went about grabbing as many different shots and compositions as possible.

I also have a landscape version of this image which you may like to check out.
