Snow, a bit like fog, possesses this great ability to render a scene into simple, basic elements. There's no stray blades of grass or distracting branches littering the floor of your scene. Instead, there's a purifying component with a gorgeous powdery texture that allows you to place the elements in your scene at strict junctures. The chaos of Nature is reduced to minimalism.

I shot this at the end of a long and tiring, but immensely enjoyable, day of photography during the early Spring snowfall of March, 2023. Though not a true 'Beast from the East' event, the conditions that triggered the deep snowfall over the North Pennines were the same, with at least a foot of snow falling overnight in places. It quickly thawed along the roads and pathways under the Spring sunshine but was still deep enough late in the day to grab pure powder shots like this.
As with most of my favourite photos, this one was completely serendipitous. I'd gone in search of a completely different composition when I stumbled across this scene on my way there. I had to physically stop myself from bumbling through the footsteps and ruining the shot. You can tell from the long shadows that the sun is going down and I didn't have long before the sun disappeared below the hills. I can't believe there are only a couple of tracks of footprints through here for the entire day. Such a lucky find.
All who wander are not lost. They're simply making footprints for the rest of us.
