The conditions on this late October day were a perfect send-off as I stood on the eastern slopes of, once again, Firle Beacon watching the sun rise over a bank of fog surging southward over the Long Man of Wilmington.
What made this day so special was the fog could be seen riding up the hillside and crashing over the top in waves. Sometimes the hill would disappear completely, other times you could see the crest of the hill pushing up through the fog like the bowhead of a whale breaching the surface.
The extensive bank of cirrus overhead diffused the sun so, as it rose, there was no glare or bleaching. Instead, the sky was filled with this gorgeous complimentary combination of soft gold and lavender which cast subtle reflected highlights atop the furrows of the fog.
What a send off!
